Solar Kool-Aid Dying Spin-In at Kirkman House Museum
On Sunday, August 10th, the Kirkman House Museum Textile Center invites you to join us at our Kool Aid Dying Spin-In from 1 4 pm. A quick dye method that produces fun, bright permanent colors and fruity smelling wool, Kool-Aid dying takes full advantage of our summer solar energy. Traditionally, dying with Kool-Aid has been an accidental process involving children and their white t-shirts. Susan Swayne, local fiber artist and Textile Center Coordinator, will share the technique she developed for permanently dying wool roving with Kool-Aid. As this dye process works best on wool, please bring your washed wool roving or yarn with you to participate. Contact the Kirkman House Museum at 509-529-4373 for a list of local vendors or pick up roving from one of the wool merchants at the Walla Walla Farmers Market. Local spinners, weavers, and fiber artists host Spin-Ins on the second Sunday of the month. They happily share information with visitors on the basics of spinning or weaving. |

| Hands on History Program Explores the Victorian Era During the past month, over 30 children and their caretakers visited the Kirkman House Museum on Wednesday mornings to learn about history through fun activities and games. So far this summer, we have played marbles, spun wool, created a woven fabric piece on a cardboard loom, and made our own ice cream. And Hands on History still has four more weeks to share with the community. In the next month, Kirkman House Museum will provide programming in fiber arts, Victorian past times, and even more marbles games. In addition to fun activities, each week, children are invited to create a paper quilt block, which will then be pieced together and displayed at the Walla Walla County Fair. If you would like to sign up for our remain classes, please see the Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Office. Registration may be completed online at www.ci.walla-walla.wa.us or at the Parks and Recreation Office, 55 Moore St. Participants may also contact the Parks and Recreation Office to have a registration form mailed. The Hands on History program is sponsored by Yancey P. Winnans grant. The Kirkman House Museum staff and board of directors would like to thanks our community partners who include Sterling Savings Bank, Bi-Mart, Super1 Foods, Dairy Queen, WalMart, Book & Game Company, and Inland Octopus. |
